Contest for Benetton Headquarters in Teheran, Iran. Object of the contest: Designing a multi-purpose building of 12 storeys (from which 4 in the underground) which is to host commercial spaces, offices, apartments, storage and parking.
The challenge for this project was the harmonious integration of the building into the existing urban context and confer a distinct identity that takes into account the cultural heritage of the city.
The design brief listed the gross area for each floor: 1200sqm for the ground floor and first floor, 900sqm for the next three floors and, finally, 675sqm for the last three floors. This request led us to the development of the concept, as we have translated the decreased of gross area as a rarefied matter along with the height. The simplest diagram of the concept and the rectangular shape of the plot gave us a very easy-to-use tool: a three dimensional pixel as a basic unit to play with.
The initial arrangement scheme of voids and blocks became more and more complex as we related them with each other in an apparent randomized way. The pixel void unit starts to define spaces and to enrich the experience of living in and around them. Unifying the voids on horizontal as well as on vertical adds a new perception to the space. From each floor, one can have three dimensional views of the building. The connections between the different users are accomplished through the vertical communication cores. The cantilevered volumes generate intricate light effects and complex spatial relationships. Beside this, the interconnected network of voids ensures natural light and ventilation in the interior spaces.
In contrast with the intricate interior, the street’s facades have a compact and simple line. The “patio” acts as an immense living organism witch struggles to penetrate through the wall to the city.
